3H and St. Marianna University School of Medicine collaborated for ePRO and EMR.
- System integration between ePRO (electronic patient report outcome) and electronic medical record (EMR).
- Possibility to confirm data input from electronic medical record itself done on the cancer patient app.
- Improve the quality of medical care by utilizing ICT in line with the medical field.
St. Marianna University School of Medicine (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, President: Katsuya Akashi, hereinafter referred as to St. Marianna Medical University) and 3H Clinical Trial Co., Ltd. (Toshima-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Hirotaka Takizawa, hereinafter referred as to 3H) integrates ePRO (Electronic Patient Report Outcomes)* and Electronic Medical Records (EMR)* and have created a dashboard that can accurately confirm the patient’s daily health information and treatment details which has commenced the operation at Oncology Department of St. Marianna Medical University Hospital. As a result, it is expected to confirm the subjective symptoms that cancer patients feel in their daily lives and treatment related information such as medication at the time of medical interview and to consider more appropriate treatment.
Dashboard screen that integrates ePRO and electronic medical records (Request 2021-7805):
It is not easy for patients to communicate subjective symptoms that they face in their daily lives in a limited interview time, and at the same time it is not easy for doctors as well to accurately grasp that information. However, by using ePRO, it is possible to grasp the symptoms that patients feel in their daily lives by using evidence-based indicators.
In recent years, there have been research results published stating “quality of life (QOL) has improved, and survival time has also been extended by utilizing patient health information (PHR: personal health care record) of cancer patients acquired using ePRO etc.” The research results have also been published and are attracting attention. However, on the other hand, to introduce ePRO, collaboration and integration with electronic medical record systems used in hospitals has been a challenge. For example, it was an inefficient operation to check the information entered in ePRO and the treatment information in the electronic medical record at the time of interview with separate systems.
In response to these issues, the ePRO “3H-P Guardian” offered by 3H has been integrated with the Electronic Medical Record of St. Marianna Medical University, and it has become possible to check the data of ePRO and electronic medical records required for medical care on a single screen.
As a result, even within a limited period of medical interview, it is possible now to accurately and quickly check the daily subjective symptoms entered by patients in ePRO and the treatment status such as medication and support the best possible options for appropriate treatment policies.
* ePRO (Electronic Patient Reporting Outcomes): A mechanism to electronically collect patient status information (PRO) obtained directly from patients.
* Electronic medical record (EMR): A system that stores and manages the progress of medical treatment (medical records) recorded by doctors as electronic information.
- Remarks from Yoshiki Horie, Department of Oncology, St. Marianna University School of Medicine
In recent years, with the development of oral anti-cancer drugs, many anti-cancers drug treatments have come to be performed in hospital. As a result, patients are now able to continue their treatment while continuing to work and live as usual. On the other hand, spending most of the treatment period at home may raise the bar for correctly communicating the pain and troubles of symptoms to healthcare professionals. Recently, it has been reported that subjective side effects in patients may be underestimated by healthcare professionals than they actually are. Hence, to maximize the effectiveness of effective treatments and to continue treatment safely and for a longer time frame, it is necessary to ensure that the side effects that patients are experiencing are communicated to their healthcare professionals. We hope that this system will provide optimized treatment management by integrating patient symptom reports with electronic medical records, which are also the cockpit of healthcare professionals.
- Remarks from Kenta Kachi, Executive Vice President, 3H Clinical Trial Co, Ltd.
“The development of the underlying ePRO “3H P-Guardian” was triggered by the results of overseas research that the survival period was extended by remotely monitoring health information such as daily adverse events of cancer patients. This time, in collaboration with St. Marianna Medical University Hospital, which is focusing on the utilization of ICT in medical care, we have been able to conduct electronic medical record collaboration as an initiative that can contribute to patients who were thinking at the beginning of development. We will continue to contribute to the improvement of the quality of medical care through such ICT support.” This time, by collaborating with St. Marianna University School of Medicine, which is focusing on the utilization of medical ICT, we were able to collaborate with electronic medical records as an initiative that can contribute to the patients that we had in mind at the beginning of development. We will continue to contribute to improving the quality of medical care through such ICT support. “
